To mark 72 years since the NHS was formed, health leaders at NHS South Sefton and NHS Southport and Formby Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are inviting residents to take part in a big ‘thank you’ on 5 July 2020.

On Sunday at 5pm, the country will come together (following social distancing guidance) to take part in a nationwide, one-off clap – not just for the NHS, but for all those who have volunteered or helped keep services and community networks going during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Following the applause, it is suggested that people could take a moment to enjoy a cup of tea with family, friends or neighbours to recognise the vital connections that continue to support us all.

It is also an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the effects that the pandemic has had on family, friends, colleagues, and our local communities.

On the evening of 4 July, landmarks up and down the country will be illuminated in blue as part of a collective memorial. To join in at home, you could put an LED candle, lamp, or torch in your window in remembrance of those we have lost in recent months. You could also wear something blue or bake a cake with blue icing.

Fiona Taylor, chief officer for NHS South Sefton CCG and NHS Southport and Formby CCG, said:

“The support that the NHS has received from the public during the pandemic has been overwhelming. The final clap on Sunday is a great way to acknowledge the efforts of the 1.5 million NHS staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly over the past few months to help patients and their families.

“The NHS will be saying its own big thank you to everybody who has helped it continue to operate during one of the biggest health challenges it has ever faced.

“We hope that all local residents will join us in paying tribute to everyone who has played their part in supporting our nation through this time – from truck drivers and cleaners to carers and shop workers. We hope this will be the start of a campaign for a kinder, closer and more connected county.”
