Your Youth Health Day

Date exercise ended - Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Sefton Young Advisors organised this event on 18 July 2018 on our behalf to hear from young people about their ideas and experiences of local healthcare.

Your Youth Health Day saw pupils from Sefton schools taken through everyday health scenarios, how to lead a healthier lifestyle, which NHS service to consider for a range of medical issues, when to get advice from local pharmacists and the NHS 111 phone service for minor conditions and when to call 999.

So we can learn more about young people’s experiences of local healthcare, we work collaboratively with Sefton Young Advisors to ensure that we communicate with young people in the right way and that they can easily share their views with us.

This is the second time we have worked with Sefton Young Advisors to stage a dedicated event on behalf of our Engagement and Patient Experience Group (EPEG) that we run jointly with NHS South Sefton CCG / NHS Southport and Formby CCG. EPEG brings together representatives from organisations including Sefton Council, Healthwatch Sefton, Sefton Council for Voluntary Services, Sefton Carers Centre and Sefton Young Advisors to look at how the CCGs can better involve residents and partners in their work.

Aims of Your Youth Health Day

  • Engaging young people in conversations about their own health
  • Introducing young people to the health services they might have accessed or may access in the future
  • Looking at young people’s current knowledge with an aim to improving it by looking at health scenarios which may affect them in the future
  • Gaining feedback on young people’s experiences of healthcare they have received or accessed
  • Encouraging young people to be more proactive and to take ownership towards their own health

How the event worked

There was a series of interactive sessions that young people were invited to take part in. There were also presentations and a short drama session, encouraging attendees to think about the small steps they can take in their daily lives to improve their health and wellbeing.

Next steps

Sefton Young Advisors made some recommendations for next steps based around the views that emerged from the session. We are continuing to work with the team to respond to these with the aim of continually improving the way we involve young people in our work.
